Review: American Apparel Riding Pants (PLUS)

HAPPY MONDAY!

Some time ago, American Apparel launched their plus size line.  This was awesome news to me because for years, I simply walked by their stores rolling my eyes at the pipe dream that 1) I can actually fit into their clothing and 2) that I would spend $40 on a pair of leggings.  However, with the vast openings of several AA stores in NYC in the last 2 years or so, it was inevitable that I'd eventually walk into their stores.  Upon my first visit, I secretly yearned for a pair of disco pants from them.  The further I walked onto their brightly lit store, I pouted at the simple but yet retro leggings, accessories and bodysuits and their ridiculous prices.  For clothing manufactured in  the US, they sure were expensive.

Fast forwards some months later while shopping at one of my favorite thrift stores in the city, I spotted these forest green ribbed riding pants from AA in a XL. I couldn't believe it.  The further I perused the racks, I lucked up on a pair of AA black disco pants all in the same shopping trip!!
Below is my work look incorporating the riding pants.

Details....
I love the patches at the inner thigh along with the ribbed material.  The material is so thick that any material you tuck into it is practically invisible beneath it.  It also acts like a bodyshaper in a way as well.  They're very stretchy and high-waisted.  So if that's not a look you like, these pants aren't for you.  Sure you can place a shirt over it, but it defeats the purpose.  TIP: I do recommend wearing a pair of spanx underneath to further smooth the tummy area.

Since this is a work outfit, I attempted to downplay the fit with a longer blazer and opted for a plaid shirt instead of a plain white one for visual interest.

Plaid Shirt.....................................American Eagle
White Blazer..................................Thrifted
Green Riding Pants.......................AA thrifted
Wedges.............................................Aldo
Accessories......................................F21, Michael Kors, Gifted, Zales
In all, if you do make the plunge ($74) and buy yourself a pair, you will not be disappointed.

What can I say; I was on a playground after all lol

What do you think? Are these pants splurge-worthy?

UPDATE 4/6/12:  The riding pants are currently on clearance in size XL ONLY for $44!!!!!  Here's direct link http://store.americanapparel.net/rsaor300dl.html?c=VillageGreen

    1. I would say that the XL in these pants is equivalent to a 12/14. Theres a lot of give in the back and leg area but not so much in the waist.
